Ruby the Demon

Ruby was a human witch (HAR HAR HAR) 'back when the plague was big' roughly 1348-1350. This makes her damn near 700 years old, a fact which she is proud of because on Hell's watch time that's an awful looooong time, another fact which she is proud of. Before she landed in Hell Ruby sold her soul to a demon to become a VERY POWERFUL witch, at least according to her own standards. Not long after (ten years maybe) Ruby was dragged to Hell by the resident hellhounds. BLAH BLAH BLAH She was tortured in Hell, it was terrible, then she started to torture and it was good, relatively speaking since Hell is still her least favorite place.

at some point she hooked up with Lilith the FIRST demon and became a close friend of her's (you know.. friends the Hell version) and that could only have boosted her status. Lilith is actually Ruby's hero in a way.

Fast forward to the birth of Sam Winchester. Lilith, Azazel, Ruby, and likely a small handful of others planned to use him to kill the first demon thus breaking the final Lucifer seal and busting big daddy out of cage in Hell. There was just a small catch--Ruby had to gain the trust of Sam Winchester and to a certain extent the trust of his blockhead brother Dean (which she never truly did). In order to gain said trust she had to make it seem as if she was helping the Winchesters meet a common goal: Killing Lilith. The sad part is Sam actually believed it was because of a glimmer of humanity she was holding onto even after all these years. That and she had to turn her back on every single demon that wasn't in the know (Lilith being the only one in the know).

After Dean was dragged to Hell, Ruby found it extremely easy to slip into Sam's pocket; she gave him the 'key' to killing Lilith, demon blood, which he drank from her. She held Sammy's hand up until the very end, leading him all the way to killing Lilith and breaking the final seal. Shortly thereafter she was stabbed with her own knife by Dean while Sam held her arms back.
